Christ or Church? Reassessing Our Priorities

As followers of Jesus, our main loyalty should be to Christ Himself. However, many people put more focus on their church denomination than on Christ. Instead of making God our priority, we sometimes get caught up in church traditions, rules, and theological differences.

This way of thinking can create division among Christians. Rather than seeing ourselves as one united body in Christ, we focus too much on what makes us different. We become suspicious of those who practice their faith differently. But Jesus did not come to create different denominations—He came to bring people into His kingdom.

Jesus told His disciples to go and spread the gospel to all people (Matthew 28:19-20). This command is more important than any church identity. The early Christians spread the gospel boldly, not because they belonged to a particular group, but because they were committed to Christ and His message.

It’s time to refocus. Being proud of our church traditions should not get in the way of our mission. While it’s fine to hold onto our beliefs, they should never divide us or keep us from working together for God’s kingdom. Our first commitment should always be to Jesus.

This does not mean we should ignore biblical truth. Instead, it means that love, unity, and our shared mission should come first, before debates over theology. We must be humble, willing to work together, and recognize that we are stronger when we are united in Christ.

Before anything else, we must be disciples of Christ. Our goal is clear: to work together in spreading the gospel, showing Christ’s love, and proving to the world that He is the center of our faith. Our actions should break down walls and bring people together, showing that Christ is what truly matters.

In the end, when we stand before God, He won’t ask which denomination we belonged to. He will ask whether we were faithful to Christ and His mission.
