There is an ongoing discussion among Christians, particularly in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) community, about the importance of tithing. It is one of those topics that can stir up quite a bit of debate, yet it remains a crucial aspect of our faith and practice. Tithing, while ultimately a free-will offering, is often regarded as an expression of our loyalty to God and His church.
The concept of tithing, which means giving a tenth of our income, is deeply rooted in the Bible. As SDAs who believe in Sola Scriptura—the principle that the Bible alone is our ultimate authority—tithing is seen as an essential practice. Malachi 3:10 clearly states, “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” This verse underscores the importance of bringing our tithes to God’s house, which we interpret as our local church.
However, not everyone follows this practice to the letter. Some SDA members choose not to pay their tithes to the church, justifying their decision by saying they use the money to support other ministries. While supporting various ministries is indeed a noble cause, diverting what is meant for God’s house can be problematic. The Bible teaches that the tithe specifically belongs to God and should be returned to His house. In Malachi 3:8, the Lord asks, “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ In tithes and offerings.”
When we choose to withhold our tithes from the church and allocate them elsewhere, even if it’s for good causes, we are essentially taking what belongs to God. This act, although well-intentioned, can be seen as robbing God. The principle here is that our first responsibility is to return to God what is rightfully His, in the way He has prescribed.
The act of tithing is more than just a financial transaction; it is a spiritual discipline that reflects our trust in God’s provision and our commitment to His work. Proverbs 3:9-10 reminds us, “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” By faithfully tithing, we honor God and acknowledge that all we have comes from Him.
Tithing also supports the practical needs of the church. It funds the ministries and activities that help spread the Gospel and provide for the spiritual and physical needs of the community. When members choose to direct their tithes elsewhere, it can hinder the church’s ability to function effectively and fulfil its mission.
It is important to remember that giving to other ministries should come from our offerings, which are above and beyond our tithes. Offerings are a wonderful way to support various causes and ministries, reflecting our generosity and desire to further God’s work in diverse ways. However, these should not replace our tithes. In conclusion, tithing is a fundamental practice rooted in biblical teachings. It reflects our loyalty to God and supports the mission of the church. While it is commendable to support various ministries, we must ensure that we first fulfil our obligation to return the tithe to God’s house. By doing so, we honor God, support our church community, and align ourselves with His divine plan. Let us be faithful in our tithing and trust in God’s promise to bless us abundantly in return.
